The Retrofit Challenge for the City of Melbourne

In October 2023, the City of Melbourne released Retrofit Melbourne, its comprehensive plan to support commercial building retrofits, especially the mid-tier. Retrofit Melbourne sets out both the scale of the challenge facing the municipality and a range of potential solutions.  

Melbourne’s CBD is experiencing elevated commercial vacancy rates alongside a growing housing shortage and targets, creating a unique opportunity to rethink the future of existing buildings.  

This presentation will describe the scale of the challenge for zero carbon building retrofits in the City of Melbourne; what the City is doing to support energy efficiency, electrification, adaptive reuse, and the retention of embodied carbon in existing buildings; our partnerships with industry to support the retrofitting and repurposing of underutilised assets; and what your business can do to be part of the solution.
